Monday, April 15, 2024, George Washington Bridge, Fort Lee, NJ;
Police Officer Mike Campoverde (L) was approached by a 42 year-old male cyclist who asked for directions to the George Washington Bridge bike lane. During their conversation, the man asked where he could get water. P.O. Campoverde supplied the man with some alternatives. A short time later, the man returned to Campoverde's location, yelling, "Call EMS, I want to hurt myself, I want to die!" The man then produced a knife, pressing it to his chest and continued shouting, "I want to die!" Police Officer Campoverde immediately approached the man, telling him to drop the knife. Campoverde told the man, "I am here to help you," as the man kept saying he wants to die. As Campoverde continued to assure the man he would help him and again ordered the man to drop the knife, Police Officer Chris Figueroa (R) arrived on scene. Both officers carefully pursued a safe approach, leading to the man dropping the knife and being placed in custody.
Fort Lee EMS responded, evaluated the man and transported him to a hospital for further care.
The Port Authority PBA is extremely proud of these officers' actions de-escalating the situation without injury to the man or officers. A job well done.

Monday, April 15, 2024, Boston, Massachusetts;
The Port Authority PBA transported its canteen to Boston for the 128th Boston Marathon to provide a relief station for the Boston Police and other Massachusetts law enforcement agencies working the Marathon. Each year since the Boston Marathon Bombing on April 15, 2013, the Port Authority PBA has traveled to Boston in April with its canteen to assist our Brothers and Sisters in Boston.
On that terrible April day in 2013, the Port Authority PBA immediately deployed to Boston to provide Boston police officers, who were working non-stop hours over many days, a place to relax, refresh and re-energize.
In the aftermath of the horror of September 11, 2001, many law enforcement agencies from throughout the country responded to the World Trade Center to help the PAPD. The PAPBA will never forget and makes it a priority to pay back the help received.
This year, the PBA canteen was staffed by PBA Sergeant-at-Arms Nick Brucato, Trustee Chairman Tariq Abdool and Trustees TJ McPike, Vinny Ricci, Mike Bunero and John Mohrman.

Recently, Police Officers Kevin LaClair (L) and Chris Zadigan responded to a dispute in the John F. Kennedy International Airport Taxi Hold Lot involving a female taxi driver armed with a knife. Upon arrival, the officers were informed that the dispute began after the woman drove over traffic cones and cut into one of the Taxi Hold queues. The woman escalated the dispute by producing a knife and began menacing multiple drivers and using ethnic slurs. The officers located the woman lying next to her taxi with a metal pipe in one hand and a knife in the other hand while she was attempting to remove a traffic cone from under her taxi. Police Officer Zadigan, using a verbal command, instructed the woman to drop the weapons and to slowly stand up. The woman ignored Zadigan's command and turned toward him with the knife in her right hand. Zadigan, drawing his weapon, again ordered the woman to drop the knife. Once more, the woman refused. Zadigan gave a third order to drop the knife she was brandishing. She was now standing facing Zadigan, again refusing his order when Police Officer LaClair dove toward the woman's right hand. Both officers struggled with the woman, disarming her and placing her under arrest.
In addition to the charges of Menacing, Harassment and Criminal Possession of a Weapon, the woman was charged with Menacing as a Hate Crime.
The PBA is proud of these officers' couragous actions and their dedication to the safety of others while disregarding their own. A JOB WELL DONE!
